Essential Steps to a Healthy Pregnancy

From the moment you find out you are expecting you are tossed into a frenzy of how to tell family and friends, nesting by prepping the nursery and making dozens of trips to baby store to make sure you are well-equipped for your baby’s arrival. It is also important to stay on top of you and your baby’s health as they are growing and developing. The more you know, the healthier you both can be. Here are some steps to help:

See Your Doctor

Get off to a good start by having your first prenatal checkup during the first trimester. It is best to start prenatal care as soon as you know you are pregnant so your doctor can discuss prescriptions you take (you may need to make modifications), prenatal vitamins, risk for gestational diabetes, due date and delivery options. This visit will help you and your doctor establish expectations for your pregnancy and delivery, and make note of any risks.

Choosing who will provide your care is one of the most important decisions you will make during your pregnancy. As a Compass Rose Health Plan member, you have many options. You can use our Provider Directory to locate health care professionals in your area. While you are looking, use this tool to start thinking about a pediatrician for your little one!

Take Prenatal Vitamins

It is smart to start taking a prenatal vitamin as soon as possible to help increase your chances of creating a healthy environment in which your baby can develop. Prenatal vitamins contain essential nutrients such as folic acid, calcium and iron — all of which are vital for proper development. There are many vitamins on the market, so it is important to talk to your health care provider about their recommendations. And, remember to take your prenatal vitamin every day.

Adopt Healthy Habits

When you become pregnant, you may need to alter certain lifestyle choices for the health of you and your baby. It is important to stop smoking, and to say no to drugs and alcohol. These activities can cause serious conditions for your baby and increase the risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, birth-weight, fetal alcohol syndrome and lifelong physical and mental problems. Compass Rose Health Plan members can receive help quitting smoking through our Tobacco Cessation Program.

Manage Conditions

If you have diabetes, you may have special health risks during pregnancy — making it imperative to control your blood sugar levels under. If you have high blood pressure, monitoring your numbers is important as well. Remember, your health affects your baby’s health. You deserve plenty of support during this time. If you have one of these conditions, call UMR to see if you are eligible for their Care Management Program at (866) 575-2540. This program provides a personal nurse coach to help you manage your condition and meet health goals.

Eat Right and Exercise

You are eating for two now. The food you eat provides nourishment for your baby, so it is important to follow a healthy and nutritious diet. And, provided you are able, exercise can provide benefits such as managing weight gain, reducing pain and swelling, improving sleep and increasing energy. Ask your doctor to help you develop an exercise plan based on your ability. You can also check out diet and exercise tips from one of our previous blog posts.
